Reclaiming Your Mind

Andre Zen December 17, 2022

Introduction

The Hermetic path begins with mastery of the mind. It is both the tool and the canvas upon which the initiate creates their reality. The Principle of Mentalism, the first Hermetic principle, teaches us that “The All is Mind; the Universe is Mental.” This underscores a profound truth: mastery over the mind is mastery over your life and the universe itself.

In this lesson, we will explore the importance of reclaiming your mind, the obstacles that hinder mental clarity, and techniques to cultivate focused, deliberate, and distraction-free thinking. For the Hermetic initiate, reclaiming the mind is the first and greatest power, for it is the foundation of all spiritual and practical work.

The Importance of a Mastered Mind

1. Clarity as Power

Clarity of thought is the Hermetic initiate’s most potent tool. A mind free from distraction becomes a beacon of focus and intention. Clear thinking allows you to direct your thoughts toward creating desired outcomes, understanding universal laws, and achieving inner and outer harmony.

2. The Mind as the Creator

According to Hermetic teachings, your thoughts shape your reality. A mind filled with chaotic or negative thoughts will project these onto the world, creating disorder and dissatisfaction. Conversely, a clear and focused mind projects harmony, leading to constructive and beneficial outcomes.

3. Alignment with Universal Laws

The universe operates according to immutable principles as discussed in the introductory lessons. By reclaiming your mind, you align your thoughts with these laws, enabling you to act in harmony with the natural order rather than against it. This alignment fosters peace, success, and spiritual growth. To put it another way, it is natural for you to grow, expand and succeed in all endeavours that are positive and beneficial to one/all.

The Modern Mind: A Battlefield

The modern world is filled with distractions: social media, news cycles, advertisements, and constant stimuli. These external influences fragment attention, cloud judgment, and weaken the mind’s natural will power. Over time, this leads to:

• Mental Noise: A state where the mind is filled with trivial or conflicting thoughts.

• Reactive Thinking: Responding automatically to stimuli without deliberate consideration.

• Loss of Intentionality: A drifting mind that lacks purpose or focus.

For the Hermetic initiate, reclaiming the mind means breaking free from these influences and returning to a state of intentional thought.

Techniques to Reclaim Your Mind

1. Mental Cleansing

The first step to reclaiming your mind is to cleanse it of unnecessary clutter. This involves identifying and releasing habitual patterns that no longer serve you.

• Step 1: Spend a sufficient amount of time identifying habitual actions that are totally unnecessary to the expansion/growth of your mental ability to think without external influence. Some personal examples that I removed from my own life include:

  • Binge watching TV
  • Habitually opening facebook for no reason in particular
  • Spending hours each evening playing computer games
  • Listening to music that does not align with my truth

The time spent on the activities above though seemingly harmless, can prevent the development of your mind, thus retarding the progress of your journey through life. Once you have completed the above exercise, the next step is as follows:

• Step 2: Spend 5 minutes initially, watching random videos on youtube, instagram or your preferred social media app, spending 10-20 seconds on each video. The goal here is to watch the video without reacting to its content. You want to retain a completely neutral stance, without reacting physically or mentally regardless of the content. You can mentally use the phrase “I reject” on everything you see or hear during this exercise. The purpose of the exercise is to build immunity to whatever you may see/hear when you choose it. The average mind is affected by everything that is brought before it from the external environment.

2. Mindful Awareness

Awareness is the foundation of mastery. Mindful awareness trains the initiate to recognize the contents of their mind without judgment.

• Practice: Throughout your day, pause periodically and ask yourself, “What am I thinking right now? Is this thought aligned with my goals and values? Does this thought serve me in this particular moment?”

3. Mental Discipline through Affirmations

Affirmations are powerful tools for directing the mind. Positive, deliberate statements help replace negative or chaotic thought patterns.

• Practice: Create an affirmation such as, “My thoughts are clear, focused, and powerful,” and repeat it multiple times a day. Use this affirmation prior to bed, and first thing upon waking to set your mind up for success.

The Role of Willpower

Willpower is the engine that drives the mind. It is through the cultivation of will that the initiate resists distractions, directs their thoughts, and remains steadfast in their purpose. The conscious mind acts as the gatekeeper, and should be used to ensure only thoughts that serve your highest good are allowed to enter into the subconscious mind. Whatever you allow to enter your subconscious mind, becomes part of you and your reality. Whatever you reject, is transformed to whatever you accept. The more you reject, the stronger your will power becomes. As an example

Reclaiming the Mind and Higher Faculties

When the mind is reclaimed and fully under your direction, the higher faculties of thought and spirit begin to unfold:

1. Intuition: A clear mind acts as a receiver for intuitive guidance, allowing wisdom from higher realms to flow effortlessly.

2. Creativity: Without distraction, the mind becomes a fertile ground for innovative ideas and solutions.

3. Spiritual Insight: A mastered mind is attuned to subtle vibrations, making it easier to connect with spiritual truths and higher planes of consciousness.

4. Manifestation: Focused thought directed by a strong will manifests desired outcomes, fulfilling the Hermetic principle of Mentalism.

Reflection and Practice

1. Journaling: Spend a week observing your thought patterns. At the end of each day, write down instances where your mind wandered or was influenced by external distractions. Reflect on how you could redirect these moments toward clarity.

2. Daily Commitment: Dedicate 5 minutes each day to practicing one of the techniques outlined above. Gradually increase the time by 1 minute each week as your mental discipline strengthens.

Conclusion

The greatest power of the Hermetic initiate is the ability to think with clarity, focus, and intention. By reclaiming your mind, you unlock your full potential. This mastery of thought is not a destination but a journey, one that requires daily effort and commitment.

As you cultivate this skill, you will find that your mind becomes a powerful ally, capable of creating harmony, achieving goals, and connecting with the divine essence of the universe. There are further mental exercises that will be of great benefit to building a powerful mind in later lessons.
